What is the difference between tile adhesive and mortar? What are their advantages and disadvantages? QingQuan will answer your questions about their uses when laying tiles.
Mortar adhesive is added to cement mortar to improve the adhesion of cement mortar, good water retention, easy construction, construction is suitable for masonry and plastering mortar, to prevent cement drum cracking and other problems!

Cement + sand + water is mixed at job site by the mason.
Quality varies and inconsistent. Sand particle size and cleanliness is not ensured, cement and water quantity varies and even mixture is not homogenous in most cases. This affects adhesion quality. Also, the shrinkage of cement causes issue and often large tiles of low porosity get detached from the substrate. In long term, movement in the substrate or thermal expansion of tiles affects the tiling system and tiles often get detached and sometimes cracked or tent up .
All disadvantages if you are fixing vitrified, large size tiles. Only advantage - low material cost.
Tile adhesive is a kind of inorganic chemical raw materials as the main, part of the polymer as a supplement, and then add a variety of admixtures evenly mixed polymerization of water hard cement-based waterproof bonding materials, and water blending that has a bonding function, after curing that has a waterproof impermeability function. Directly add water and mix can be used.

Cement, Sand, water retaining agent (for self curing), redispersible polymer powder and some more ingredients like biocides.
Pre-mixed, consistent quality. Comes with instructions to use.
Adhesion strength is excellent. Cures self. Workability (smooth paste) is very good. Thin layer suffice. Does not settle and creates undulations after tile is placed on its layer. Applied by notched trowel in specified way to ensure full coverage and avoid air pockets below the tiles.
In long term, when applied with right groups and spacers, makes the tiling system flexible to adjust the stresses due substrate movement and tile expansion.
All advantages unless you compare cost of tile adhesive and site made cement mortar. I don't think however, we can compare these two as mortar is an unfit, in appropriate material in most of the cases which involve large size tiles, vetrified tiles.
Tile Adhesives | Sand-Cement Mix |
Fast and efficient, easy to use, only mix with water. | Time consuming. |
No prior soaking of tiles is required. | Variety Of Tiles must be soaked. |
Better bonding strength. | Moisture can accumulate beneath the floor tile and wall tiles, causing hollow spaces and debonding. |
Can be grouted within 24 hours without waiting for the moisture to evaporate. | Grouting cannot be done within 24 hours. |
The application can be done on existing tiles and many special substrates like polished cement, dry wall system, etc. | Not applicable to lay low absorbent tiles like 60 x 60 cm granite or any larger tile sizes. Not applicable to lay tiles on existing tiles, and on polished cement. Not applicable to lay glass mosaics. |
Tile adhesive typically has a smooth slurry that helps create a thinner layer when applying it for natural stone, ceramic tiles, and other wall tiles installation. | Cement-Sand slurry are usually thicker in consistency, making it difficult to spread an even layer onto the surface. |
