The Specific Reaction Mechanisms of HPMC in Mortar

HPMC is a key product of Shijiazhuang Cellulose Co., Ltd. Serving as a thickening and water-retention agent for construction applications, it ensures excellent performance during application. This chemical powder is highly regarded and widely favored by countries across the globe.

1. Adsorption and Dispersion Mechanism

HPMC molecules possess numerous polar groups, such as hydroxyl groups (-OH) and methoxy groups (-OCH₃). When added to mortar, these polar groups adsorb onto the surfaces of cement particles and other solid particles (such as sand grains). This occurs because the surfaces of cement particles carry electrical charges, and HPMC molecules adsorb onto these surfaces through electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding.

This adsorption process facilitates the better dispersion of solid components—such as cement particles and sand grains—within the mortar system. For instance, in mortar without HPMC, cement particles tend to agglomerate; however, the adsorptive action of HPMC prevents such agglomeration, ensuring a uniform distribution of particles. Consequently, this improves the workability of the mortar, including its fluidity and plasticity.

2. Thickening and Water Retention Mechanism

Upon dissolving in water, HPMC forms a solution possessing a certain degree of viscosity. Within the mortar, its long-chain molecules intertwine with one another to form a three-dimensional network structure. This network structure serves to increase the viscosity of the mortar, rendering it thicker and more viscous.

From the perspective of water retention, the HPMC network structure effectively inhibits the migration of water. On one hand, it reduces the internal settling of water within the mortar caused by gravity; on the other hand, it forms a protective film on the mortar's surface, thereby slowing down the evaporation of water into the external environment. For example, in hot and dry environments, mortar without HPMC experiences rapid water evaporation; conversely, mortar containing HPMC retains its internal moisture, thereby extending the mortar's open time (workable duration).

3. Mechanism of Retarding Cement Hydration

HPMC retards the cement hydration process to a certain extent. Cement hydration is a complex chemical reaction in which the minerals contained within cement particles (such as tricalcium silicate, dicalcium silicate, etc.) react with water to generate hydration products.

By adsorbing onto the surfaces of cement particles, HPMC hinders direct contact between water molecules and the cement particles, thereby slowing down the rate of the hydration reaction. This retarding effect does not constitute a complete inhibition of hydration; rather, it ensures that the hydration process proceeds in a more uniform and controlled manner. This holds significant implications for the performance of mortar; for instance, it enables the mortar to maintain excellent plasticity over an extended period—thereby facilitating construction operations—while also contributing to the development of the mortar's strength in the later stages.
