Industrial-grade HPMC is one of our best-selling products, offering both low price and high quality. It can be used as a thickening and water-retaining agent in daily chemical products. Shijiazhuang Cellulose Co., Ltd. is a cellulose manufacturer from China and can provide you with a sufficient supply of this product.

Cosmetic-grade, cold-water soluble hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) is a type of non-ionic polymer, primarily derived from natural cellulose. It is a white, odorless, and non-toxic powder that dissolves rapidly in cold water, forming a transparent, viscous solution. HPMC possesses excellent water retention, thickening, binding, emulsifying, dispersing, film-forming, suspending, adsorbing, gelling, surface-active, and protective colloid properties. HPMC is the common abbreviation for hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, and it has several common names, such as instant thickening agent, emulsifying stabilizer, stabilizing thickener, antifreeze thickener, dispersing thickener, and instant cellulose.

Cosmetic-grade, cold-water soluble hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) is primarily used in the daily chemical, detergent, cosmetic, and textile chemical industries. For example, many commonly used products contain hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, such as facial cleansers, shampoos, lotions, gels, creams, toothpaste, mouthwash, bubble bath, conditioners, and styling products. It takes about 3 minutes to achieve viscosity in tap water at room temperature, while in purified water, the viscosity development is slower, taking approximately 30 minutes. This provides sufficient working time, making it easy to control viscosity and convenient to use.
Cosmetic-grade cold water soluble hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) has the following product characteristics:
1. Excellent water retention: HPMC has hydrophilic properties, and its addition to slurries, pastes, and other paste-like products can maintain high water retention.
2. Cold water soluble HPMC uses natural raw materials, is relatively mild, low-irritating, environmentally friendly, and safe.
3. Stable pH: The viscosity of its aqueous solution is usually stable within the pH range of 3.0 to 11.0.
4. The product's aqueous solution has surface activity, possessing emulsifying, protective colloid, and relatively stable properties and functions. Its surface tension is approximately 42-56 dyn/cm for a 2% aqueous solution.
5. Thickening and water solubility: It dissolves quickly in cold water, some organic solvents, and mixtures of organic solvents.
6. Viscosity enhancement: When a small amount is added and dissolved, it forms a transparent, viscous solution with stable performance and high transparency. Solubility changes with viscosity; the lower the viscosity, the greater the solubility, effectively improving the stability of the system's flow.
7. Excellent salt resistance: HPMC is a non-ionic polymer and is relatively stable in aqueous solutions of organic electrolytes or in organic electrolytes.
8. Thermal gelation: When the aqueous solution is heated to a certain temperature, it becomes opaque until flocculation occurs, completely losing its viscosity. However, it reverts to its original solution state after cooling. The temperature at which thermal gelation occurs mainly depends on the product type, solution concentration, and heating rate.
10. Other characteristics of HPMC in the cosmetic field include excellent film-forming properties, broad enzyme resistance, dispersion, and bonding properties.
