HPMC is a key product of Shijiazhuang Cellulose Co., Ltd. Serving as a thickening and water-retention agent for construction applications, it ensures excellent workability and construction results. This construction-grade HPMC—a white chemical powder—is highly acclaimed and widely favored by countries around the globe.

Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC)is a non-ionic cellulose ether produced from refined cotton through a series of chemical reactions. It is a colorless, odorless white powdery substance that, when dissolved in water, forms a clear to slightly turbid colloidal solution. It possesses characteristics such as thickening, water retention, and ease of application. Aqueous solutions of HPMC remain relatively stable within a pH range of 3.0 to 10.0; however, when the pH falls below 3 or rises above 10, the viscosity decreases significantly.
The primary functions of HPMC in cement mortars and putty powders are water retention and thickening; it effectively enhances the material's bond strength and sag resistance. Factors such as temperature and wind speed influence the rate at which moisture evaporates from products like mortars and putties. Consequently, even when the same quantity of cellulose is added, the resulting water retention performance may vary slightly depending on the season. During actual construction, the water retention of the slurry can be adjusted by increasing or decreasing the dosage of HPMC. The water retention capability of HPMC under high-temperature conditions is a critical indicator for distinguishing its quality. High-quality HPMC can effectively resolve water retention issues encountered in high-temperature environments. In dry seasons or regions characterized by high temperatures and strong winds, the use of high-quality HPMC is essential to enhance the water retention performance of the slurry.
Therefore, during construction in hot summer weather, it is imperative to add the full prescribed amount of high-quality HPMC according to the formulation to ensure adequate water retention. Failure to do so may lead to quality defects—such as insufficient hydration caused by premature drying, reduced strength, cracking, hollowing, and detachment—while also increasing the difficulty of application for the workers. As ambient temperatures decrease, the dosage of HPMC can be gradually reduced while still achieving the same level of water retention.

In the manufacturing of construction materials, HPMCserves as an indispensable additive. The incorporation of HPMC improves the following properties:
1. Water Retention: Enhances water retention capabilities, thereby mitigating issues such as poor hardening and cracking in cement mortars and dry-mix putties caused by premature drying or insufficient hydration.
2. Workability: Increases the plasticity of the mortar, improves its application properties (such as ease of troweling), and boosts overall work efficiency. 3. Adhesion: The enhanced plasticity of the mortar enables it to bond more effectively with both the substrate and the object being bonded.
4. Anti-sagging: Due to its thickening effect, it prevents the mortar and the bonded object from slipping or shifting during application.
