The difference between hydroxypropyl starch ether and cellulose ether HPMC

Shijiazhuang Qingquan Cellulose Co., Ltd. is a Chinese manufacturer of HPMC/PVA/CMC/MHEC/HEC. HPMC is one of our key products. This product is of excellent quality and reasonably priced. It can be used as a thickener/water-retaining agent in construction and is loved by people all over the world.

1. Air Entrainment: Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose ether (HPMC) has strong air entrainment properties, while hydroxypropyl starch ether (HPMC) has none.

2. Hydroxypropyl starch ether can effectively improve the anti-sagging and anti-slip properties of mortar. HPMC, on the other hand, typically only improves the viscosity and water retention of the system, but not its anti-sagging and anti-slip properties.

3. Thickening and Viscosity: HPMC generally has a viscosity of tens of thousands, while HPMC has a viscosity of several hundred to several thousand. However, this does not mean that HPMC is less effective at thickening mortar than hydroxypropyl methylcellulose; their thickening mechanisms are different.

4. Molecular Structure of Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose Ether (HPMC): Although both starch and cellulose are composed of glucose molecules, their composition differs. In starch, all glucose molecules are aligned in the same direction, while in cellulose, the opposite is true; the orientation of each adjacent glucose molecule is opposite. This structural difference determines the differences in properties between cellulose and starch.

5. Compared with hydroxypropyl methylcellulose ether (HPMC), hydroxypropyl starch ether can significantly improve the initial yield value of tile adhesive, thereby improving its anti-slip properties.

Hydroxypropyl starch ether can assist cellulose ether in improving water retention. A small amount of hydroxypropyl starch ether can replace part of the cellulose ether, with significant effects.
