The Impact of Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC) on Cement-Based Building Mortars-HPMC

HPMC chemical powder is one of our best-selling products, offering both high quality and an affordable price. It serves as an effective thickening and water-retention agent for construction mortars. Shijiazhuang Cellulose Co., Ltd.is a cellulose manufacturer based in China, capable of providing you with a reliable and ample supply of products.

Construction-grade Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose products are widely utilized to enhance the performance of hydraulic building materials, such as cement and gypsum. In cement-based mortars, HPMC improves water retention, extends the open time and adjustment time, and helps to reduce sagging.

 a. Water Retention

Construction-grade Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose prevents moisture from seeping into the substrate (e.g., walls). By retaining an appropriate amount of moisture within the mortar, it allows the cement a longer period for hydration. Water retention is directly proportional to the viscosity of the cellulose ether solution within the mortar; the higher the viscosity, the better the water retention. Conversely, as the water content increases, water retention decreases, because for a fixed amount of construction-grade HPMC solution, an increase in water volume results in a reduction in viscosity. Enhanced water retention leads to an extension of the curing time for the applied mortar.

 b. Improved Workability

The application of Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC) serves to improve the workability of the mortar.

 c. Lubricity

All air-entraining agents also function as wetting agents; by reducing surface tension, they facilitate the dispersion of fine powder particles within the mortar during mixing with water.

 d. Sag Resistance

A mortar with good sag resistance implies that there is no risk of sagging or downward flow when applied in thick layers. Sag resistance can be significantly improved through the use of construction-grade Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose. In particular, newly developed construction-grade HPMC products are capable of imparting superior sag resistance properties to mortars.

 e. Air Bubble Content

A high air bubble content leads to improved mortar yield and workability, while also reducing the formation of cracks. However, it simultaneously results in a reduction in compressive strength and may give rise to a "liquefaction" phenomenon. The air bubble content is typically dependent on the mixing duration.
