The Role of Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose in Daily Chemical and Skincare Products

HPMC is a key product of Shijiazhuang Cellulose Co., Ltd. It serves as a thickening agent in daily chemical products, ensuring excellent performance. HPMC is highly acclaimed and widely favored by countries around the globe.

Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) is a synthetic polymer primarily derived from natural cellulose through chemical modification; it is widely utilized within the field of daily chemical and skincare products.

In applications specifically tailored for daily chemical detergents and cleansers, HPMC serves primarily to enhance a cosmetic product's thickening, foaming, emulsification stability, dispersion, binding, film-forming, and water-retention properties. For low-viscosity products, it functions primarily as a suspending and dispersing agent, as well as a film-former. Common viscosity grades used in the daily chemical industry include 100,000, 150,000, and 200,000 mPa·s; the specific dosage added to a product can be selected based on the individual formulation, typically ranging from approximately 0.3% to 0.5% by weight.

The grade of HPMC specialized for daily cosmetics and skincare products presents as a white to slightly yellowish powder. It is odorless, tasteless, and non-toxic, and it is soluble in cold water as well as in mixed organic solvents, forming a transparent, viscous solution. Aqueous solutions of this cellulose exhibit surface activity, high transparency, and strong stability; furthermore, its solubility in water remains unaffected by pH levels. In shampoos, body washes, and skincare products, it acts as both a thickening agent and an anti-freezing agent. It imparts excellent water-retention and film-forming properties to hair and skin. Given the significant rise in the cost of basic raw materials, cellulose—acting as an anti-freezing thickener—can substantially reduce production costs for shampoos and body washes while still delivering highly desirable performance results.

Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose enjoys a broad scope of application within daily chemical and skincare products, including facial cleansers, lotions, shampoos, body washes, creams, gels, toners, hair conditioners, hair styling products, toothpastes, mouthwashes, and bubble solutions for toys.
