Why is hydroxypropyl methylcellulose added to pre-mixed mortar?

Answer: Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose slows down the rate of water loss in mortar. Water loss in mortar involves two processes:

First, water diffuses from the interior of the mortar to the surface;

Second, water on the surface of the mortar evaporates or diffuses into the base material. Only when water continuously diffuses from the interior of the mortar to the surface can it evaporate or diffuse into the base material; and only when a large amount of water evaporates or diffuses into the base material from the surface of the mortar can a larger humidity gradient be formed in the mortar, driving the water inside the mortar to diffuse to the surface. These two processes are mutually influential. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose has the effect of adsorbing water molecules, and even restrains the diffusion of water molecules to the surface through intermolecular forces, thereby slowing down the rate of water loss in the mortar. For construction sites with harsh environmental conditions, this water-retaining effect not only provides time for stress relaxation but also maintains the necessary moisture for the hydration reaction of the cementing material, thus ensuring the normal development of mortar performance and improving the mortar's resistance.

The rate of water loss in mortar is related to environmental temperature and humidity, and to the thickness of the mortar.
